Wednesday, in Mrs. Brogan's class we did an experiment on building a raft.
We had to build a raft so it could hold pennies. So you know it had
to be strong enough and it had to be able to float on water. She put
us into groups of four and if we weren't ready, we lost a penny, so we had
to work hard and fast. It didn't matter how good your raft looked, it
mattered how many pennies it would hold and how long it would float.
We had to use all of the materials and couldn't get any extra (I wish we
could have gotten more tape). When we put our raft in the water, it
floated, but the person who put the pennies on put most of the pennies on
the side that couldn't hold much. We only had 6 pennies the first time,
and the second time we only had 7 pennies (just one more!). It was fun to
me because we tried to bet the other groups. But we didn't. As
soon as we took it out of the water, it fell apart. Now try it on
your own and see how many pennies yours will hold. Materials:
10 straws
1 yard
tape
Scissors
Container
of water
Pennies
